Man taken to hospital after stabbing at St. James St Smitty’s

Winnipeg police respond to stabbing at St. James restaurant parking lot

A man was taken to hospital after he was stabbed at a restaurant parking lot in Winnipeg, police say.

Multiple people were involved in a brawl shortly after midnight Sunday outside the Smitty’s on St. James Street, police spokesperson Jason Michalyshen says.

During the fight, one man was injured. Police applied a tourniquet and chest seal to the man before he was taken to hospital in critical condition.

‘Multiple people’ were involved in a fight in a parking lot in St. James early Sunday morning.

He is now in stable condition but suffered a “major injury” to his lower extremities, Michalyshen said.

A second man was also injured, but those injuries weren’t life-threatening, a Sunday news release from police says.

“It really is sad,” Michalyshen said. “As a community we should all be very concerned.”

The victims and others involved are in their 20s to 30s, he added.

The parking lot outside the Smitty’s on St. James Street was taped off Sunday morning.

Police were called to the area for a report of a fight and a stabbing and arrived there at about 12:10 a.m., accourding to a Sunday news release. A group of people became involved in an altercation which later escalated, and someone took out “an edged weapon,” the release said.

“Major incidents can evolve from just a small, brief, verbal dispute and things escalate,” said Michalyshen.

“We always hope that cooler heads will prevail and individuals make better choices to manage their emotions and clearly that wasn’t the case here.”

The major crimes unit is investigating. Anyone with information or video surveillance is asked to call 204-986-6219, Crime Stoppers at 204-786-TIPS (8477), or submit a tip online.
